Commitment to achieving Net Zero

Bruton Knowles Ltd is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050.

We are currently working to develop a full implementation plan which will allow us to bring this target further forward.

Baseline Emissions Footprint

Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions. Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.

Baseline Year: 2020

Additional Details relating to the Baseline Emissions calculations.

2020 is the Baseline year for Emissions using this format.

Scope 1 has been reported looking at the company car fleet, at this point in time, including business mileage, for example.

Scope 2 and 3 has been calculated using the factors associated with the introduction of the Covid 19 pandemic.

Baseline year emissions:

EMISSIONS TOTAL (tCO2e)
Scope 1 - Company Vehicles 2.7
Scope 2 - Purchased energy, (electricity servicing company facilities) 33.2
Scope 3 - Company Paper Consumption 0.079
Total Emissions 35.98 (tCO2e)

Current Emissions Reporting

Reporting Year: 2022

EMISSIONS TOTAL (tCO2e)
Scope 1 - Company Vehicles 2.3
Scope 2 - Purchased energy, (electricity servicing company facilities) 18.16
Scope 3 - Company Paper Consumption 0.018
Total Emissions 20.478 (tCO2e)

Emissions reduction targets

To continue our progress to achieving Net Zero, we have adopted the following carbon reduction targets.

We will reduce our carbon emissions from Scope 1 and 2 emissions to achieve NetZero by 2050 and will put in place interim targets to ensure sufficient progress is made.

Materials – Throughout the course of 2023 we plan to significantly lower the emissions produced from the companies’ paper consumption through transitioning to eco focused suppliers who produce goods from recycled materials using carbon neutral methods. The transition to recycled paper will promote a circular economy by reducing the consumption of finite natural resources and contribute to reducing our carbon emissions by 53% per 10 sheets of paper.

Transport - We are continuing to monitor the carbon emissions produced from business travel and have a three-pronged approach to sustain and accelerate our reduction in emissions. Firstly, we are transitioning a large quantity of client/staff meetings to online platforms such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom to lower the need for travel. Secondly, by switching to eco-friendly office materials and reducing paper waste we are significantly diminishing the emissions produced in this area which is supporting in offsetting the emissions created through travel. Thirdly, we have developed a staff environmental questionnaire with a key focus on transport with the aim to assess the prospect of a public transport scheme to encourage staff to use their local public transport to travel to work and meetings.

We project that carbon emissions will decrease over the next five years to 5 tCO2e by 2027. This is a reduction of 70%.

Progress against these targets can be seen in the graph below:

Carbon Reduction Projects

Completed Carbon Reduction Initiatives

The following environmental management measures and projects have been completed or implemented since the 2020 baseline. Whilst we understand these projects have led to a reduction in carbon emissions, we are unable to quantify the extent as we no longer have a like for like scenario. Re-baselining in 2022/23 will enable us to quantify the measures in effect when performing the contract.

  • Our environmental management system across the UK is UKAS certified to ISO 14001 and is audited annually. It focuses on objectives and actions on areas that will have the most significant environmental impact both in the short and long term.
  • Launched a hybrid approach to working for 100% of our staff, which supports homeworking and brings a reduction in the amount of carbon generated through employee commuting.
  • Advocated for the use of green energy suppliers to buildings in which we are a tenant.
  • All waste produced in the office environment is recycled using the company’s high-quality labelled disposal systems. Guidance is in place to support staff on how to correctly recycle their waste and through this we reduce our generation of landfill waste and consequently methane emissions which supports in our response to combating climate change.

In the future we hope to implement further measures such as:

  • Continue to reduce business travel by air, rail, and road through effective measurement and a sustainable travel policy.
  • Work with key individuals on carbon reduction plans such as setting carbon budgets and working with our suppliers to reduce emissions to achieve net zero in line with the SBTi corporate net zero standard.
  • Reduce gas consumption by making sustainable choices for new buildings wherever possible.
  • Continuously work to collect the highest quality, primary data on our emissions to aid in reduction and progress measurement.
